Commemorative Plate
33x48
Primer, gesso, epoxy, solvent-based screen printing ink on stacked wood panels
The appropriated images and objects are printed onto painted wood panels. Dimensional objects are turned into flat surfaces. Taking away the original physical medium allows each visual to be equal with each other and exist now as a sort of readymade object.
I want to examine our social norms and what we put value on. In the case of “COMMEMORATIVE PLATE” we are putting a higher value on a piece of porcelain than human life. We accept the rules of authoritative abuse and we also accept the rules of fine art objects. Combining these two elements presents a new dialogue, forcing the viewer to question societies value system, and offer a new meaning onto the existing images.
